The relationship between job stress and health promoting behaviors among intensive care unit nurses

Abstract

|
Purpose: This study is to assess the relationship between job stress and health promoting behaviors among nurses working in intensive care unit.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between 2 March and 27 April 2011. A total of 195 nurses completed study. Information was obtained on demographic characteristics, job stress, and health promoting behaviors. Univariate analyses were done to describe study variables.
Results: Job stress significantly differed according to musculoskeletal symptoms, while health promoting behaviors significantly differed according to subject’s age, working duration, marital status and musculoskeletal symptoms. Job stress was negatively associated with health promoting behaviors.
Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that nursing intervention programs reducing nurses’ job stress can lead to increased health promoting behaviors.
